Cathedral of Our Lady of Kasperovskaya

Cathedral Kasperovskaya Mother of God is one of the most beautiful temples Nikolaev . He entered in the register of monuments of the city. Cathedral belongs to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Kiev Patriarchate.

The history of the Cathedral

The temple was built in honor of one of the most revered icons - icons of the Mother of God Kasperovskaya. From 1853 to 1918 the icon of each year arrive in the city during the procession and within a month was in all local churches. Among the residents of Nikolaev appeared a belief that she saved the city from attack during the Crimean War of 1853-1856.

Construction of the cathedral began in 1904. The main architect was the famous capital master Fyodor Eppinger. Construction lasted for about 4 years. In 1908 the church was consecrated, and in 1916 it opened the door for the first time for the parishioners.

The church has a rectangular shape, the walls of the cathedral are decorated with carved details, stylized ancient Russian architecture of 16-18 centuries. The main decoration of the church - it`s his 7 domes. According to Orthodox tradition, these domes symbolize the seven sacraments of the church.

The fate of the temple, as well as many church buildings in Ukraine, filled with dramatic events. The church was badly damaged during the seizure of church property in the early 20th century. In 1934 the church was closed and did, and it was transferred to the building Nikolaev shipyard. Then was taken down the top of the bell tower, almost destroyed the dome, then later it opened a club. During the Second World War, resumed services, but at the end of the war the club again resumed its work.

Since 1994 began a complete reconstruction of the cathedral, he returned to the original appearance. Cathedral of Our Lady of Kasperovskaya - architectural jewel Nikolaeva, a place that every tourist should visit.
