Church of St. Paraskevi Chernivtsi

One of the greatest Orthodox shrines Chernivtsi is the Church of St. Paraskeva, which is under the jurisdiction of the Kyiv Patriarchate. At the same time the church is a kind of calling card of the city. He waits for tourists who climb up from the train station to the city center.

The history of the Church of St Paraskeva

Temple was the first Orthodox shrine the stone city. In his city was ancient wooden church. 1844 in its place began construction of a new stone cathedral, which lasted over 20 years. The initiator of the building was made by Father Henri Vasylovych that own funds allocated for its construction.

But money was not enough and then stepped Bishop Yevhen Hakman, who helped complete the construction. Not yet completed temple was dedicated in 1862 in honor of St. Paraskeva Srpska.

The church remained active until 1962, when the Soviet government decided to give the city room. Originally the church had a warehouse, and from 1986 - the chess club. Only in 1992 the church was returned to the Orthodox community. Since then, the church became a cathedral and is the cathedral for the Diocese of Chernivtsi UOC-KP.

The church has become a landmark for the life of Ukrainian Chernivtsi 19th century. 1864 solemn liturgy honored the 3rd anniversary of the death of Taras Shevchenko. Then the first Bukovynians-Rusyn Ukrainian term was used, which was significant for the mental association Bukovina and Ukraine. Tellingly, in worship attended by the Orthodox and Greek Catholics city.
