Church of the Holy Virgin, Mamayivtsi

Protection Church History

Village Mamayivtsi historically consisted of two Vilshyna - Old and New Angle. In the village there was a small chapel of John the Baptist, which has been preserved to this day. However, in the early 20th century, it could not accommodate all the parishioners considerable village. Then it was decided that Mamayivtsyam need more church. However, the start of construction is constantly delayed due to disagreement in the same community. Finally, in 1907, was laid the foundation stone of the future church.

The designer of the temple of the Holy Virgin was the architect of Chernivtsi Frank Kosinski. Completed construction in 1910. November 21 it was consecrated. At the same time the church bells were made, but they have gone to the needs of the Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War.

Under Soviet rule the church was transferred to a local farm and was used as a warehouse. It kept the salt and fertilizers, resulting in the loss of much of the interior of the church. Since 1980, the temple housed a museum of atheism. Virgin Church congregation returned only in 1989.

The church became memorable for the Orthodox community of Bukovina, since she first came under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate in Kyiv region. Since that time it is visited by the highest ecclesiastical rank on holidays or anniversaries points. In particular, for centuries the church was visited Patriarch Filaret.

The church was built in the typical style of Bukovina early 20th century and is somewhat reminiscent Orthodox churches of Chernivtsi. Pokrovsky church combines the characteristics of a Romanian churches, local motifs and traditions of the Byzantine school.

The interiors have been preserved in part. To this day came iconostasis, which is a contemporary house. The paintings and interior decoration have not survived in integrity. However, remnants of the old restored mural is still visible.
