Independence Square, Sumy
Independence Square in the city of Sumy is not only the administrative center but also a historical landmark. From this area in the 17th century began construction of the city under the leadership of Colonel Cossack regiment commander G. Kondratiev and Arsenyev. The first church, located in the area, was built of wood in 1694 and was called the Nikolaev.
Today, the historical center is decorated with a majestic and solemn Resurrection Cathedral , founded in 1702 Previously areas adjacent to both churches were united. Shrine became known as Peter`s, because it almost visit Tsar Peter I.
The war left its mark on the integrity of the area. At the end of hostilities landmark restored. At the time, the area was named after Lenin. The modern name appeared in 1991, when Ukraine became an independent state.
