The ruins of the Jesuit monastery

Ruins of the Jesuit monastery are located in the heart of the city Zhitomir . This building is considered to be the oldest in the city and now belongs to the architectural and historical monument of national importance.

The history of the church begins with 1724. It all started with the establishment of legal Jesuit in Zhitomir. It was founded by the Jesuits, who were given land by the Polish King Augustus second thanks to its privileges. This Order established a monastery on the isolated territory and colleagues. By itself, of legal designate the part of the city that belonged to the Jesuits. It is not subject to the rules and laws, the judiciary and administrative power the rest of the city.

Over time, there established a school, shops, homes for students, a bakery and even a small factory for the manufacture of candles. Later the Jesuits began to give up their land for rent for the use of local people. When in 1792, Eurydice was attached to the Russian Empire, its right partially abolished, and in 1893, Catherine II had ordered to liquidate the Jesuit Monastery and from there were only living cells.

In Soviet times, these premises were used as a prison of the NKVD until 1941. After the war, the building housed a book and shoe stores. In the period from 1960 to 1980 all the buildings were completely demolished Eurydice and in their place built homes and buildings for various organizations. To this day we preserved only remnants of a building of two floors, where once lived the students. Jesuit rededicated Temple, in the future it is planned restoration.
