Opposite the museum in Petrovsky Park is a magnificent monument to Shevchenko in Poltava - outstanding Ukrainian poet and artist. In sculpture, the world-famous figure highlights the severe brevity image that speaks of strong character and freedom-loving Ukrainian patriot.

History Shevchenko monument

Poltava poet visited more than once. He first came here in the summer of 1843, and later - in 1845 and in 1859 respectively. In Poltava province Kobzar wrote the following works:

  • "Blind";
  • "Heretic";
  • "Do not pursue a rich";
  • "Do not envious of the rich."

Also in this period was created several paintings, including portraits of prominent local figures. It was painted mansion Kotlyarevskyi, based this figure was later restorers reconstructed building, monastery and Hrestovozdvyzhennya.

In 1845 the poet lived in Poltava for two years. During this time, wrote the novel "Twins", which reflected his impressions and experiences of living in the province.

Poltava memorial was officially presented to the city in 1926, 12 March. With the opening in the same place there was a rally of residents of Poltava, nearby towns and guests from other cities. On the occasion of removing the curtains all sounded familiar melody composer P. smoothly, and many thousands choir sang "Testament" Shevchenko.

Architecture monument

The monument was constructed of reinforced concrete elements of cubism style by the famous sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze, whose childhood passed in Poltava. In the form of figures traced the influence of constructivism. Pedestal sculpture is the accumulation of asymmetric planes in the manner and scope of which grows like figure of Shevchenko. The height of the monument dates back five meters, of which about two of the very figure of the poet and just over three - pedestal. On a pedestal engraved inscription - a line of famous works of Shevchenko`s "Testament": "And I will smite the wicked will okropite blood."
