Monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God, New Zagorov

Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin can be called the pearl of the New Zagorov. The old church of the Renaissance survived more than 350 years, remaining a symbol of beauty and an example of architectural art.

The history of the Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin

  • The first settlements of monks on the site of the New Zagorov emerged in the 12th century.
  • Monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin began to build in 1566 at the expense of Zagorovsky (Ukrainian gentry, after whom is named the modern village). He decided to give away their wealth to erect a separate temple in the monastery of the Nativity of the Virgin.
  • In 1696, in the interior of the building there are precious wall paintings of the talented Ukrainian artist Job Kondzelevicha.
  • In early 1900 terminated the service in the church because of wars and revolutions.
  • In 1943 there was a tragic battle at the walls of the monastery, which killed the soldiers UPA fought against the German occupiers. Next to the building you can find a plaque with precise data on the victims.

Despite the considerable damage resulting from the tragic events of the 1940s, the monastery of Nativity of the Virgin in the New Zagorov remains one of the biggest attractions of the village.

How to get to the monastery in the New Zagorov

New Zagorov town is adjacent to the Old Zagorov, between the villages of Pavlovka, Lokachi, Privetnoye. On the road near one of these villages is easy to find new Zagora guide signs.
