Paleontological Museum, Odessa

Odessa paleontological museum is included in the top 10 of paleontological museums in the world. It is located on the territory of the Odessa National University named after II Mechnikov. In 1865 it opened a geological study, which had the paleontological department with 318 exhibits. Big investment in an independent gallery was made in 1873 Kovalevskaya. He presented a large-scale collection of fossils freshwater mussels from the south of France.

The exhibits in the Museum of Paleontology

Paleontological Museum today - it`s 500 square meters of unique fossils from all over Ukraine and the world. Its collection of more than 60 thousand exhibits. The museum also has a library with over 10,000 titles, most of whom are working-founder of paleontology and geology. The most important collection of the museum is a collection of complete skeletons of vertebrate animals that live in our region.

One of the key exhibits of the museum include a diorama describing the 15 sections of the main stages of development of the planet and life on it. Each step is illustrated by the characteristic shape of fossils and paleogeographic schemes. Particular attention should be paid to underground paleontological reserve - disposal of extinct vertebrates (the remains of camels, foxes, hyenas, mastodons, ground squirrels). They are representatives of mammals from karst caves of Odessa. There are also skeletons of large animals era BC (mosasaurs, ichthyosaurs, mammoths, etc..).

Additional impressions of excursion to the Zoological Museum of ONU , which preserved a unique exhibit of marine whale in full scale.
