Chigirinskaya fortress Chyhyryn
Chigirinskaya castle is located in the small town of the same name. In the history of the country it is known as the place where you started the Ukrainian power. After all, in 1648 during the liberation war of Ukrainian Hetman Bogdan Khmelnitsky Chigirin was appointed Hetman`s capital of Ukraine. The fortress is located in the central part of the city on Castle Hill.
History Chigirinskaya fortress
Strengthening Chyhyryn first appeared in the late 16th century, it built on the orders of King Sigismund III of Poland. It is a small wooden castle. Due to its geographical location (Chyhyryn located on the eastern boundary of the Kingdom of Poland, close to the trade route Kiev - Crimea) the fortress was to impede the progress of the enemy to the west, deep into the Polish kingdom. In 1677, for three weeks the Turkish army, which consisted of 120 thousand soldiers, unsuccessfully besieged the fortress, but they did not manage to break the thick walls of the city.
In the 30s of the 17th century the castle underwent major restructuring. It was fortified with three rows of massive wooden walls around the perimeter of the fortress surrounded by moats and filled them with water.
When the city was Bohdan Khmelnytsky, he ordered to rebuild the castle, following the example of the largest fortifications in Europe. Wooden walls have given way to a stone, were the most powerful bastions and moats. As a result of the reconstruction of the castle became one of the strongest in Ukraine.
However, it existed in such a fortress only 30 years old. In 1678, the city took in the siege of the Turkish army, it lasted a long time and the command decision was made to withdraw from the garrison and the fortress itself to explode. As a result of these actions from the castle there were only a few stones and miraculously survived fragments of walls.
In the 19th century castle ruins and did understand, and on Castle Hill opened the quarry.
What can be seen in the fortress
Today, on Castle Hill was a park. It is part of the National Historical and Cultural Reserve "Chigirin". Among the many architectural and historical monuments deserves special attention recreate Chigirinskaya bastion fortress. It bears the name of Hetman Doroshenko. We build it as the corner of the castle to protect the side walls of the building.

- unusual and very picturesque pond with water lilies;
- stone cross in honor of the defenders of the bastion Chigirinsky.
