Radar "Doug" Chernobyl

Radar "Arc", better known as the object of "Chernobyl-2" or "Russian Woodpecker" was the secret object to the 1980s. Her first trial took place in 1980. It is located in the eponymous town near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
History radar
Its purpose sozdaniya- as quickly and accurately detect the start of intercontinental ballistic missiles outside the country. With the help of rocket launch could be traced back to the starting point of the torch ignition. This development has played a huge role in the defense and military industry of the USSR. This object has been created to prevent a nuclear attack by the United States of America.
The principle of operation of the plant was based on the reflection of radio signals by the ionosphere. Incoming signals are trapped by the antenna "Chernobyl-2", and then processed on a computer. Station worked very noisy, emitting a characteristic sound of the air, for which he received a colorful nickname - "Russian Woodpecker." After the accident at the Chernobyl radar mothballed. But over time it became clear that its operation in a mode of alienation is impossible, so the station was closed, thus making it one of the objects of excursion routes.
The station includes two huge antenna - receiving and transmitting. The height of the receiving antenna is 135 m, width - 300 m, height of transmission - 210 meters, width - 85 m. In addition to these dishes in a stationary radar complex includes 26 transmitters, each of which has a rather impressive size - with almost two-storey house.
Up to the present day radar "Duga" has remained almost intact. Even today there are daredevils who risk to climb the 135-meter height and look at the surrounding area.
