Church of St. Martin, Lviv
Church of St. Martin in Lviv is on the street Zhovkivska in areas Pidzamche. It is a monument of Baroque architecture.
Street History
- Zhovkivska Street got its historical name in 1993. Historically, it is that this way could reach the city Zhovkva in the 19th century. But in those days was called Korytnoyu street (named sleeves Poltva).
- Since 1885 the street was named St. Martin (named after the church).
- In the Soviet period the street was renamed Decembrists.
The history of the church of St. Martin
Church of St. Martin was built at the expense of the Polish nobles Aleksander Zborowski in 1630 for shod Carmelites religious order. The temple was originally made of wood. After a fire in 1648, unfortunately not survived.
Over the past 17 years (1736-1753 years) built the present church building. The money allocated for the construction of Yang Rubchynskyy. The architect of the new church in baroque style became Bernard Meretyn.
Church of St. Martin was painted in the 18th century Stroyinskym M. and J. Mayer. Unfortunately, to date their works have not survived. And to the sculptural decoration had a hand John Pinsel. His work "Crucifixion" now preserved in the Museum Pinsel.
In the 90s of the 20th century building of the church of St. Martin gave Pentecostals.
