Singing terraces

In the northeastern part of Ukraine in Kharkiv region located Gorodnov small village, the number of residents does not exceed one thousand people. What is so remarkable about this desolate place ... It is here to be the only one in Ukraine "musical band" created by nature itself. It was called "Singing terraces."

Gorodnov village formed on the right bank of the river Merlot. In the early 18th century on the territory of what is now "Singin 'terraces' battle took Ukrainian-Swedish troops of Ivan Mazepa and Charles XII of the Russian army. In Gorodnov, in an old mill Swedish King and the Ukrainian Hetman found their shelter from attacking them from all sides of Russian soldiers. Two centuries later, the owner of the land became Sumy entrepreneur Pavel Kharitonenko.

Ten kilometers from the estate "sugar magnate" in the south-western slope of the hill were planted in southern plants - mainly garden trees. Since the local climate was too severe for heat-loving varieties, the original decision was made on their placement. Six brick terraces facing south, in a single row planted trees. Terraces formed a semicircle, which was reminiscent of the model of ancient amphitheater. Was in the middle of the stair run. It started from the first terrace level, finishing sixth. The height of each wall was about four meters and width - ten. Thus, rare species of southern plants constantly illuminated by the sun. Besides brickwork accumulated and kept warm for a long time, which allowed to grow and gather a rich harvest.

Soon, however, Pavel Ivanovich Kharitonenko noticed another feature of his orchard. If you stand next to the steps facing terraces and quietly say the words, their volume increased many times over. Any rustling seem like thunder, and the wind blowing - the impending storm. The sounds of nature, merging together, create a unique melody because of the unusual layout "Singing terraces." Be sure to experiment with your voice, being close to the terraces. Later, using the unique ability of terraces, family Kharitonenko suited here music concerts. Were invited well-known artists. The sound of their voices resounded amazing 40 - 60 meters around. Thus, the place is called - "Singing the terrace."

Now this unique building a popular tourist destination. It also holds an annual festival of Ukrainian folk song titled "Green terraces."
