The Black House
In the centre of the historic city of L’viv on Rynok Square Black House is located. It is one of the most valuable and beautiful buildings of the square. It’s impossible to give the go-by to this house, numbered 4. In Ukrainian this building of stone and brick is called kam’ianytsia, which was built by following the “rule of three windows”, which occurred on Rynok Square. Each kam’ianytsia couldn’t have more than three windows on the facade. It gave the right of equal opportunities, because the windows of the first floor could be used for trading, workshop, or advertising. The colours of the rust stone façade have darkened over time, that’s why this kam’ianytsia bears such name – Black House. It’s decorated with so-called diamond rust, although it is flagged with limestone blocks. Kam’ianytsia was built in the years 1588-1589 by Italian architects Petro Barbon and Pavlo Rymlianyn. Its decoration really impresses with its wealth – ornamental carvings, decorative frames and rustic stonework were used in the external design. In addition, the facade is decorated with statues of Our Lady, St Martin and the Apostles, that was typical of the Renaissance. Before entering the kam’ianytsia you can notice a little bench, which is quite uncomfortable to sit on, as it was intended to guard, and specially was made the way so they wouldn’t sleep standing guard. Now the Historical Museum is located in this kam’ianytsia, where you can get to know not only many historical facts, but also enjoy a beautiful interior with its marble stone items and exquisite carvings.
