The Monument to Taras Shevchenko
The Monument to Taras Shevchenko was erected in Kharkiv, which was an important event for citizens. The great poet has played an important role for formation and development of Ukrainian literature. He was a fighter for the freedom of the Ukrainians and their better future.
The Monument to Taras Shevchenko was unveiled in March 24, 1935 in a park named in his honour. It was created by sculptor Matviy Manizer and architect Joseph Langbard. The monument is a multi-aspect composition made in the style of Stalin Baroque, famous at that time. On its step structure there is a 4.5-meter figure of Taras Shevchenko, who angrily doubles his right hand into a fist and frowns. In fact, the pedestal is surrounded with a spiral, where 16 dynamic figures of smaller size are placed. Among them you can recognise serfs, as the poet used to be one of them. Also you can see characters of his works and ordinary workers there. All pieces of the monument are made of black labradorite weighing 30 tons.
The author of the monument to Great Kobzar has hidden inside it one detail – a wheel. Kharkiv citizens say if you find it, you're sure to find your love.
