Memorial stone in honor of its first written mention of Poltava

Poltava is a very interesting historical monument - a memorial stone in honor of the first mention of Poltava in Ipatiev Chronicle. Stone was set on the Cathedral Square of Poltava in 1974 during the celebration of the 800th anniversary of the city.

The city was first mentioned in chronicles in connection with the campaign of Prince Igor Polovtsian Sviatoslavovych on. The battle took place in 1174, near Poltava after crossing the river Vorskla. Battle ended in defeat Allied forces under the leadership of the Polovtsian khans Konchak and Kobyak.

It is a record of the event in 1174 and was the first written record, the first documentary proof of the existence of Poltava (in the annals of the city was mentioned under the old name - Ltava) on the river Vorskla.

And later, thanks to archaeological excavations, historians have come to the conclusion that the city existed several centuries before this historic event. And in 1999, the residents of the city celebrated is another anniversary - 1100 years of Poltava. To commemorate this anniversary, in the street Lunacharsky (1923 - Transfiguration lane) street was renamed in 1100 anniversary of Poltava
