History of Polish Gate

Polish Gate was built in the 15th century based on the ancient fortifications of the 13th century. They limited the entrance to the city from the West. Gates had a system of several locks, which carried water level in the river. When attacking enemy guards drowned them.

Polish Gate were some kind of wall, which was used as a dam across Smotrytsky Canyon, five watchtowers that were scattered on both banks of the river canyon.

In the quiet time, the dam held back the water from the river, and the attack - discovered the dam, and the water flooded the canyon. As a result, this created a difficult barrier to attack enemies.
