Galitsky Castle

Galitsky castle was built in the mid-14th century. However, even in the 11th century, according to historians, in its place was a wooden stronghold. It is impossible to determine who initiated the construction of the castle, according to some sources is credited with Casimir the Great, on the other - Lyubertu governor. It is known that the castle was built almost 100 years. He became one of the biggest castles in all of Galicia. Mainly used in the construction of wood and earthen ramparts. In the 15th century the scale of the building were so great that at the same time there could be about 1,000 soldiers, a few dozen guns and firearms.

Throughout its history the castle several times been subjected to assault. In 1490 he tried to take the rural army under the wire Flies, in 1620-ies - the Tatars, during the liberation war in the summer of 1649 of the castle fell to the army of Bogdan Khmelnitsky.

During construction of the new fortress Galician fortress gradually lost its strategic importance. In 1767 the surviving fortifications were completely dismantled and the material used for the construction of the city`s Marina. The remaining ruins rose above Galich until the early 20th century.

Today Galitsky castle protected by the state. Are active restoration work is planned to restore the surviving part of the fortress, the south-west tower and the Church of St. Catherine.
