Lviv National Scientific Library named after V. Stefanik is not only a major scientific and educational center of the city, but also the largest cultural and architectural monuments of the city. The library building is an architectural monument of national importance, situated at the foot of the mountain Vronovskih, in the south-west from the city center.

History Stefanik Library

The idea to open the library was announced in the early 19th century. Count Jozef Maximilian Ossoliński in 1817 acquires a former convent of the Carmelites by public auction with a view to open a restaurant with a library and a museum. Then formed the basis for the formation of funds:

  • private collection of the family estate Ossoliński;
  • copies of the masterpieces of literature from libraries Tadeusz Chatsky;
  • part of the collection of books of Prince Jerome M. Yushinskogo;
  • Collection Count Evaristo Kuropatnitskogo.

Later then the Polish Research Foundation was founded (Ossolineum), which began its work in 1827. Building a project of reconstruction of the future library building was entrusted to the famous Viennese architect Peter Nobile. Directly managed by the construction of a military engineer Józef Bem.

In the mid-19th century, the area around the former monastery cleared from the wooden houses. Part of the preserved body, upset a side wing of the former economic destiny. In 1845 we initiated the interior design of the building. Dome stacks and library interiors were painted by the artist Antonio Benedetti. In his work, he used military symbols, laurel wreaths and garlands and family crests.

Ossolineum Library in the 19th century was the center of Polish culture in Lviv. On the basis of the center has a museum, a library with a reading room, as well as typography.

Lviv National Scientific Library named after V. Stefanik was opened on the basis of Ossolineum in 1940.

  1. In 1971, before the main course to the library was a monument to Vasily Stefanik.
  2. In 1987 the building was supplemented plaque dedicated to the founders of the "Ruska Troytsy" - Markiyan Shashkevych, Jacob Golovatsky and Ivan Ivan Vahylevych.

Collection library in Lviv

The funds of the Lviv National Library holds more than 8 million copies of publications, including:

  • 250 thousand rare books;
  • more than 75 thousand manuscripts;
  • 38 thousand of printed music;
  • 49 incunabula - rare books, which were published in Europe from the beginning of printing and up to the 14th century.

Particularly noteworthy are lifetime editions of works by such well-known Ukrainian and foreign authors, as Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko, Lesya Ukrainka, Mikhail Kotsyubinsky, Michael Gogol, Victor Hugo, Honoré de Balzac, Charles Dickens and many others.

The jewel of the collection is the largest collection in the department Ukrainika - manuscripts and printed books from the 11th century and the period before the beginning of the 20th century, archival documents, a vast collection of periodicals, cartographic editions, one of the largest in Ukraine musical foundations of domestic and foreign composers.

Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in 2001, part of a unique collection (3,725,000 copies) after V. Stefanik Lviv National Scientific Library were made to the fund, which is of particular importance for the Ukrainian science and can not be recovered in the event of loss or destruction.

In 1638 the building was created as a convent of the Carmelites, he founded his Velzhinsky Casper. Over the entire period of its existence the monastery building undergone renovations on several occasions. As a result, the reconstruction in the 1820s-1850s, the structure was one of the best examples of architecture in the classical style.

The building is a two-story library. Facades are laconic, not burdened by special decor. The height of the two different floors, the first - above, the second - below. The windows are rectangular in shape. In the hall of manuscripts preserved example of a 19th-century stucco.

From the street the building is limited Stefanik fence with metal bars and two gates. The central part of the body, including the part of the old convent, is the corridor layout with single in the premises.
