The ruins of the synagogue Golden Rose, Lviv

The ruins of the synagogue "Golden Rose" ( "Touray Zahav") in Lviv - one of the oldest shrines of Jewish folk in the territory of Ukraine. The building is an architectural monument, constructed in Renaissance style. "Golden Rose" is considered to be the clearest example of the history and architecture of Galicia. From the 16th to the 20th century "Golden Rose" was the main subject in the Jewish Quarter, as well as a center of cultural and spiritual life of the citizens.
The history of the synagogue "Golden Rose"
The project of the synagogue "Golden Rose" by the Italian architect Paul happy, with the participation of Ambrosia Prihilnogo. Construction took place in 1582. Renaissance architectural style with some gothic elements was chosen for the project. "Golden Rose" was the second synagogue in Lviv.
The Roman Catholic Church issued a permit for the construction of the shrine only on the condition that its size should not exceed the other buildings in the city. The synagogue is located in the yard, according to the plan was almost rectangular. Above the central hall later was undeveloped gallery for women, for her ladder was mounted on the west facade.
In the 1930s, large-scale studies have been carried out of the temple, experts have created his plan, and made all the necessary measurements. The synagogue "Golden Rose" in 1941, was looted by German troops, and was altogether destroyed in 1943.

Around the name of the synagogue is legendary. One of them is connected with his daughter (his wife) Nakhmanovich - the man who more than any other contributed to the construction of the temple. It is believed that she has agreed to become the wife of the bishop, that he helped to get permission to build a synagogue. After the promise was fulfilled, a young girl thrown out the window. The girl`s name was Rose, and the synagogue was named after her. There are several versions, but this one is the favorite legend among residents and tourists.

Up to now, only remnants of the synagogue remains. "Golden Rose" is included in the list of monuments, taken under the protection of UNESCO and is an architectural monument of local importance. Several years ago, it has been included in the program of revival of the unique historical and cultural sites in the world.
The idea to restore the synagogue there was also in the city`s Jewish community after Ukraine gained independence. The money collected citizens, archaeological study of the remains of buildings have been carried out. It plans to rebuild the center, which was one of the main shrines to the Jewish people of Ukraine. Next to the synagogue on Staroyevreyska plan to open a museum street.
Getting there
The ruins of the synagogue "Golden Rose" is located on the street Fedorov, in the former Jewish quarter, only 200 meters from the Market Square . With the main train station of the city here runs a tram number 6 (stop - "Street Basement"), as well as number 1, 10 (stop - "Market Square")
