Holy Transfiguration Cathedral in Vinnytsia

Holy Transfiguration Cathedral in Vinnytsia

For the present day Holy Transfiguration Church is the main active Orthodox church in Vinnytsia. Its grandeur is breathtaking and rich history attracts many tourists.

This cathedral was built in the 18th century under the project of Paolo Fontana, a famous architect of that time. At that time its building looked other way and beard different name.

Originally it was a Catholic church built of wood. At that time the building was a great example of Baroque style. Later, in the year of 1758, it was rebuilt in a massive stone structure. Roman Catholic Church turned into Orthodox Church in 1832. This event was signified by the placing of cupolas on the roof of the side towers. These towers with its domes were demolished after the Revolution of 1917.

Today a six-column brick building facing to Soborna Street, one of the oldest traffic arteries of the city, can be noted by you on the mentioned street. The building with adjacent cells and an undercroft can be found there. The undercroft is covered overhead with semicircular arches.

The interior of the church is simply gorgeous! It is decorated with magnificent Corinthian pilaster capitals and entablature with its incremental lines. Fragments of amazing wall paintings of the 18th century have been preserved here.

Respectable people, well known in the history, have visited the church. Mykhailo Kotsiubyns’kyi, famous Ukrainian writer and social activist, was baptised and got married here; dean Porphyry Voznesens’kyi baptised his child here in 1864, and Nicholas I, the Emperor of Russia, with his sons Nicholas and Alexander have spent some time in this church.

Sunday school for children is open here now. In 2002, under the aegis of this school, an orthodox theatre studio called "Lampadka" was found here. The priest Vitaliy Goloskevych regularly conducts interviews for adults. A local library is always open to the public and constantly increases its collection of religious literature. Children, youth and bishop's choirs are there too. The last mentioned was twice appreciated as the best church choir in the whole Ukraine at the festival of spiritual singing in Kyiv.
