Fountains of L'viv

Fountains of L'viv

Rynok Square is located in the centre of L’viv. Its decorations are four statues of Greek gods, symmetrically located on each corner of the square. Sculpture of Neptune, Amphitrite, Diana and Adonis are elements of the fountains. The author of these sculptures is a famous L’viv sculptor Hartman Witwer.

The statues are located in fountains with octagonal shape bowls. Fountains were built in 1793. On the place of two of them ponds used to be, where water pipes were laid so local residents could consume water. By the way, at that time only wealthy people could afford themselves to lay such water supply. Actually, they weren’t fountains, but wells with water jets pouring in two directions – today fountains with statues are reproduced exactly the same way they were several centuries ago.

Trade flourished on the square – merchants from different countries came to the market. Later fountains on the square were used to wash greens, fruit etc. Four charming fountains and their statues are still located on the square, but today they are more of aesthetic importance. Neptune and dolphin at his feet is the protector of the city; the wife of Neptune, Amphitrite, represents the consistency of an ancient marriage; Adonis is a symbol of eternity and cycling; beautiful goddess Diana is a patroness of hunters and a defender of law and order in a multinational state, that’s why she is depicted with a bow, accompanied by dogs.

Once you have visited L’viv, you will feel its warmth and hospitality. Real masterpieces of Rynok Square, which in summer abounds with colours of flowers, and in winter is covered with a snow-white blanket, leave you unforgettable memories about this city.
