Holy Cross Cathedral, Uzhgorod
Holy Cross Cathedral is the most famous and important Christian church in Uzhgorod . The mastermind behind its construction was the local Count Janos X Druget. To implement their plans in 1640, he invited experienced Jesuit monks.
Construction of the temple lasted 6 years. Since 1773 the cathedral was owned by the Greek Catholic diocese. The interior of the building at that time was made in the Rococo style and painted by skilled craftsmen of the Transcarpathian region.
Today the cathedral combines the features of two styles - neo-baroque and classicism. This appearance he got after the reconstruction in 1878. Holy Cross Cathedral became a true spiritual home and the heart of the city for local residents.
The first thing that catches the eye when viewed from the cathedral - its height, the predominance of light colors in the design, monumentality. However, the building of the cathedral appears light and delicate relative to other structures that time.
Three-tiered dome with chimes, red marble staircase and a portico with columns make it simply unique. Pass such a masterpiece of architecture can neither one connoisseur of high art.
