Cathedral of the Assumption, Kanev

Prince Vsevolod O. in 1144 in Kano built an Orthodox church, which bore the name of St. George, but later changed its name and survives today as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin. With Style buildings belong to ancient architecture of pre-Mongol period. Temple reminds Kiev Church of the Assumption of the Virgin and is decorated with small niches from the front before they contained frescoes.
The cathedral was destroyed twice. For the first time in the 13th century Mongol-Tatars. And for the second time - in the 17th century. During the siege of Kaneva Turkish-Tatar army, local residents took refuge behind the walls of the temple. Tatars were unable to persuade residents to give up and set fire to their hideout. For lack of other choice parishioners surrendered. And their Archimandrite Macarius of Kanev was subject to torture and after multiple killed. In 1688, Makarios was canonized.
In 1810 the cathedral was repaired Greek Catholics, and only 23 years later returned to the temple of the Orthodox Church. Near the cathedral is buried famous children`s writer AP Gaidar.
