Uspensky Cathedral

Cathedral in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1748-1770 years. Originally there was a wooden church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, with two-story bell tower. Unfortunately the construction of the cathedral was delayed for 22 long years, due to lack of funding and materials for construction. And yet in 1770 the construction of the cathedral was completed. Cathedral was the first stone building in the city of Poltava.

The exterior of the cathedral was quite controversial in the central part of the cathedral were considered Roman shades, and the dome had features of Greek architecture, and compared it with other Byzantine basilica. In the history of the cathedral many interesting events and circumstances: in the cathedral were once rare gospel in 1628 and 1644, in 1787 the cathedral was visited Catherine II, also in this cathedral served as cantor grandfather of the famous writer Poltava - IP Kotlyarevskogo.

Not far from the cathedral in 1774, construction began on the bell tower, which is delayed by as much as 27 years for the same reasons as the construction of the cathedral. Therefore, the construction of the bell tower ended only in 1801. The bell tower was built in the classical style, with four tiers, topped by a spire is 44 meters in height. On the second floor is a large bell on its sides cast images - Assumption of the Virgin, Saints Peter and Paul and St. Nicholas.
