Bushansky Castle

Bushansky Castle

Bushansky castle is located on a promontory formed by the rivers and Bushanka Murafa. This beautiful old castle built in the 16 th century. The initiator of its construction was the Polish hetman Jan Zamoyski.

The history of the castle Bushansky

At the time, its area totaled almost half a hectare. The building had a rectangular shape and consists of 6 towers. Each of these contains a separate cellar for storing gunpowder stocks. Between them all towers were connected together with the help of secret underground tunnels. Approaches to the castle from all 4 sides are very well protected by a deep moat and the highest rampart. Fortress is constantly exposed to attacks of the Tatars.

Starting from 1648, the building of the fortress was used as a refuge for local Cossacks, but in 1654 it again won the Polish troops. In this region there is a legend that when the Poles broke into the city, its defense ruled the widow of one of the centurions. She managed to set fire to the powder to blow up the fort and reserves together with the enemy. As a result, all of the castle remained only one tower, which in 1756 converted into a bell tower to St. Michael`s church. In Soviet times, the church was destroyed.

Bushansky Castle today

Before our time from the legendary castle remained only the ruins of the fortress, cellars and several underground passages. The upper tier of the tower houses a museum surviving defense of the village, and at the site of the former fort are buried Cossacks.

The entire complex is a historical and cultural reserve of national importance. It was founded in 2000. Archaeological excavations in the area is continuing.
