Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine

Truly one of the most impressive buildings of St. Michael`s Square - the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. In 1934, the capital of Soviet Ukraine moved from Kharkiv to Kiev. At St. Michael`s Square, it was decided to create a government quarter: two monumental buildings - to the Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party of Ukraine and the government of the republic. Instead, the cable car was planned to build a huge staircase to the embankment and install the 75-meter statue of Lenin that looketh toward the Dnieper River. To clear the area, was demolished some of the most outstanding monuments of old Kiev - St. Michael`s Cathedral , which was restored only in 2000. Under the plan, prepared for demolition and the present shrine of Kiev - Saint Sophia Cathedral , but those plans went awry, prevented permanent adjustment of the creative elite of the country, and then the war broke out.

However, its history in the building of the current Ministry of Foreign Affairs has only government agencies. Since the 1940s there have acted the regional and city party committees, as well as the main Komsomol institutions. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the building housed the municipal leadership, but eventually moved here Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and the Soviet coat of arms above the colonnade given way to national symbols of Ukraine.
